Kitchen Units: Planning Layouts That Suit UK Living
British kitchens average among the smallest in Europe, which makes unit layout less a question of style than of engineering. The difference between a kitchen that flows and one that fights you is usually decided before a single door style is chosen.
The triangle still works â smaller
The classic working triangle (sink, hob, fridge) survives every trend for a reason, but in UK dimensions the target is tighter: each leg between 1.2 and 2.7 metres. In galley kitchens â the national standard â put the sink and hob on the same run with prep space between them, and let the fridge face them. The one unbreakable rule: never trap the dishwasher door and the most-used drawer in the same swing zone.
Drawers beat doors below the waist
If you are choosing units, spend where it hurts: deep pan drawers in base units hold more, show everything, and end the crouch-and-rummage that base cupboards demand. Wall units matter less â but take them to the ceiling; the dusty gap above cupboards is the most wasted volume in British housing.
Doubling the units you already have
Renters and postponers can claw back half a kitchen without touching a carcass. Risers split tall shelf gaps into two usable levels; stacking shelves do the same inside cupboards; turntables make blind corners spin their contents to the front. A weekend and three organisers routinely recover more usable space than one new unit would add.

Plan the triangle, buy drawers where you can, and organise vertically where you cannot. In a UK-sized kitchen, centimetres are strategy.
Quick answers
What is the ideal distance between worktop runs?
1.2 metres in a galley â enough for one cook plus one passer-by and an open dishwasher door. Beyond 1.5m, the triangle stretches and everything becomes steps.
Are corner units worth the money?
Only with hardware: carousels and pull-out corner systems rescue the space. A plain blind-corner cupboard is where colanders go to be forgotten â a turntable retrofit is the budget fix.
Wall units or open shelving?
Wall units for storage volume, shelving for the two metres you genuinely style and dust. Most UK kitchens do best at 80% doors, 20% display.
